In late October, rumors began flying around that there wouldn’t be a Pep Rally this year and reactions varied from anger to relief to disbelief. Unfortunately, these rumors were true. As Thanksgiving approached, students were upset as they realized there really wouldn’t be a Pep Rally. Due to the disappointment felt by students, especially many of the seniors who won’t have their last Pep Rally, the new question flying around was “why aren’t we?” I was able to sit down with Mr. Hobin to find out exactly that.
The main reason for the lack of Pep-Rally seemed to be time, or lack there of. One of the first points Mr. Hobin made clear was that the Pep-Rally wasn’t “cancelled” due to the behavior of the students or any similar reason; instead it was just never planned. For the last few years, there have been a handful of teachers who formed a committee to plan the Pep-Rally. This year, many of these teachers were extremely busy and were unable to make such a big commitment. In June, the committee disbanded and began searching for teachers to take over, but not enough people were able to volunteer their time.
Unfortunately while this was happening, the fate of cheerleading, ROTC and all other clubs and JV sports was still being debated. Due to the confusion on the fate of these extracurriculars, and no teachers initially stepping up to take over, the chances of having a Pep- Rally were fading away. As the confusion lasted farther into the summer, it became clear that a Pep-Rally would not be possible. There was not enough time to plan all the different parts of the assembly including the skits, decorations, athletics, and the safety of the students.
One question I found important was what can be done to bring the pep-rally back next year? Mr. Hobin’s reply was that new teachers would need to step up running the committee. He views this change in committee as a chance for new ideas to be brought forward, and is excited to watch the event evolve. I suggested getting the students more involved in the planning, and he definitely saw that as a possibility.
It is unfortunate that there will be no Pep Rally this year, but hopefully with the help of students and teachers it will be able to return next year.
