West Side Story is a play based on Shakespeare's famous love story Romeo and Juliet. It is about two star-crossed lovers from two rival gangs named Tony and Maria, and one of them ends up dying at the end. I am extremely pleased with the drama program’s production of West Side Story overall. The only complaint I have was that the audio was poor at the very beginning of the play. I could hear the actors and actresses fine, mainly because I was in the front row, but I feared that the people in the back couldn’t hear what was going on. Other than that the production went very smoothly, from the acting to the changing of props, all of it I was impressed by.
The lighting was perfect the tech crew did an impressive job with transitioning the lights throughout the show for example whenever a scene ended, they instantly went to black and when a new scene started the lights came right back on. The tech crew also did very well with the spotlights as well whenever an actor/actress would deliver lines the spotlight would instantly go on them. Overall very pleased with the lighting throughout the show.
Throughout the production the acting was perfect. I could obviously tell that all of the performers knew their lines and characters very well. Also, the delivery of lines and projection of voice were very well done and I was very satisfied with it. I did not have any trouble understanding the lines or hearing anybody during the performance. I was very impressed by the acting.
The choreography was on point. I could clearly see that months of practice and determination went into the dancing. The performers’ dance moves were in sync and everybody knew where they were supposed to be and when to be there.
Lastly the singing, I was blown away by the vocal abilities of the cast. They exceeded my expectations. This particular part of the play was the only thing I had doubted a little bit before I saw the play. But obviously, that doubt was reversed.
The drama club’s 2018 production of West Side Story impressed me greatly. I never realized that Coventry High School had so many talented people and I am very proud of the drama club and our school’s arts program. I look forward to seeing more CHS plays in the future.
