Are you tired of the same five songs being played to death on the radio? Or are you tired of feeling like the radio host just doesn’t want to play the songs you like? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you should check out CHS’s student-run radio station. Rita Stubbs and Dan Lopes run the station,WCVY, on Mondays from 2-5 pm, broadcasting on 91.5.
Dan and Rita, who both joined WCVY to “hang out and listen to music,” play the songs they love and know well. Rita typically plays alternative rock and indie rock, while Dan plays whatever he is in the mood for which can include anything from rock to rap. The student run radio station does not rely on listeners to fund the station, but instead they broadcast as a public radio station. This means that they are free to play whatever pleases them most.
“We are very unlike radio stations like 92 PRO-FM in the sense that they play the same five songs all the time and I don’t think that, in the past three times we have broadcast, we have played a single repeat song,” said Dan.
If you would like to contribute to what Rita describes as “maybe ten [listeners] a week” then tune into WCVY on Mondays after school. Listeners can expect a broad range of music that they may have never heard before and is constantly different each week. As Dan says, “If you don’t like what I play, get used to it.” This sentiment really encompasses the idea that they have brought to the radio: listening to whatever you want and not being ashamed of it.
Listeners eager to hear their favorite song on the radio can tweet at either Dan (@DJ_lopes9) or Rita (@rstubbs721) on Twitter to request a song to be played.
