Addressing the Bullying Problem by Laken Messier
Bullying in any way is wrong and hurtful. We should all think before we act and we should remember that we all have someone we love and we wouldn’t want to see them bullied. Bullies are known to be weak, so let’s be strong and help each other instead of hurting each other.
Schools all around the world are facing the issue of bullying. Bullying is a very serious issue and it needs to end. One of the biggest problems caused by bullying is the lifelong effects it has on kids. Not only are the victims being affected, but also the class. If bullying is going on in a classroom, then lots of other kids will witness it and be affected by it. For example, some kids will feel tempted to participate, while others will fear for their safety.
Some of the most common types of bullying that exist are cyber, verbal, and physical. Cyber bullying happens online, mostly through social media. Verbal bullying takes place when the bully is face to face with their target and they want to bring the person down by critiquing and name calling that other person constantly. Physical bullying is when one person is getting beaten or abused in some way by another person for absolutely no reason.
Research shows that all three types of bullying can lead to serious issues such as depression, low self-esteem, health problems, poor grades, and suicidal thoughts.
Studies also show that kids in a classroom who witness bullying are being affected by the issue as well. Some of the lifelong effects for these students include feeling powerless to act, fearful, guilty for not acting, and sometimes even temptation to participate.
The last group of people bullying has a lifelong effect on are the bullies themselves. Research shows that those who bully end up getting in trouble more frequently in their lives. Some of the lifelong effects bullies have are getting into frequent fights, poor grades, smoking and/or drinking, bringing weapons to school, and vandalizing property.
According to Psychology Today, adults can easily prevent bullying by connecting with the kid being picked on and telling off the bully in a way that will make them listen. The article also stated that oftentimes, kids are afraid to talk to an adult when there is an issue because they feel disconnected from adult peers.
Ms. Tefft, a CHS guidance counselor, felt that 20% of upperclassmen were being bullied, and the majority were dealing with cyberbullying. Ms. Kasbarian, one of the Dean of Students also agreed that cyberbullying was the most common form of bullying at CHS. She also noted that she had only seen three to four cases of actual bullying this year. Other issues had to do with friends who were fighting.
