A New Addition To Our School: The Literature Club By ISABELLA CARLOW
The group reads a variety of genres, though their focus isn’t just limited to books- plays, poetry, short stories, and more are all included in the reading material. A vote is cast to determine what they’ll read for the next meeting, so everyone is involved in the picking process. After reading, the club engages in a group literary analysis of the texts with a combination of written and group discussion.
We have many great, diverse clubs in our school. You could say we have it all, from more academic based ones like the math club, social clubs like Student Council and Yearbook, and many more. It was about time for a book club! A few months ago, there was a new addition to this long list; the Literature Club.
The Literature Club held their first meeting on November 28th of last year, but only recently caught my attention from all the posters they put up around school. I absolutely love reading, and wanted to find out more (though I haven’t attended a meeting because of my work schedule). The club was co-founded by two juniors, Katerina Kolinsky and Madelyn LaFleur, and currently has about a dozen members. They meet every other Tuesday from 2-3:30 to discuss the latest book they’ve been reading, with this week’s book having been The Metamorphosis by Frank Kafka.

After reading, the club engages in a group literary analysis of the texts with a combination of written and group discussion. Participation isn’t mandatory to be in the club, and you could just silently attend the meeting if you wanted to. The atmosphere is nice, and everyone is friendly with each other, especially new members. The club is open to anyone who likes reading, or who may want to deepen their thinking on some of the classics (which is especially good for AP Lit). It’s also a fun club to join just for the sake of hanging out with friends and talking about books!
Their next meeting -where they’ll be discussing the first five to ten chapters of “Jane Eyre”- is Tuesday, March 18, if you’re interested in joining the club! They have a calendar of all their future meetings, and a list of books that they pick from on their google classroom (the class code is euletpo).
