If you haven’t already taken the test, it’s about time for you juniors and seniors to start thinking about the SAT. We all know the feelings of anxiety you get just thinking about tests, but fortunately, there is a bright side to the new SAT.
The new SAT was introduced in March of 2016 and it is VERY different from the old test. Instead of three sections, there are now two: Math and Reading & Writing. Each section is scored on a 200 to 800 scale, and there is no longer a penalty for guessing. In addition, the odds of a correct answer have increased because the number of possible answers has decreased from 5 to 4. And to make everything even better, the essay that was once required is now optional (depending on the college you are applying to).
The new Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is similar to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). Although there are positive changes to the test, there has been mixed feedback. For example, the test has more words in it. So when a student is reading a math problem, they will notice what some have claimed are unnecessary words. The new test pushes students to excel in their reading. Unfortunately, this can be a problem for kids who struggle with English, or reading in general. “The most fundamental change is that there are many, many more words,” says educational director for PrepMatters, Aaron Golumbfskie. “If you don’t read well and happily, this test isn’t going to be your friend.”
Now to answer the question all students ask themselves – how can you prepare for this test? Try reading more nonfiction. Persistent reading can help students on the writing and grammar section. Try taking SAT prep classes to train you for what to expect on the test. The new SAT is a huge step forward into the future for many young adults.
The next SAT test will take place on June 4th. Make sure to register by mail (by May 5th) or by phone (by May 11th).
