PSAT and SAT are now offered for free to Rhode Island public school 10th and 11th grade students. CHS grade 10 students will take the PSAT in the fall of 2017 and the grade 11 students will take the SAT in the spring of 2018.
Governor Gina M. Raimondo announced a plan last year to make the PSATs and SATs free for every public high school sophomore and junior. This proposal will ensure that all students can use the SAT to consider higher education opportunities. Increasing participation in the SAT is the first step to having more students be college and career ready.
The SAT sets an appropriately high standard for Rhode Island students and should be a good tool to help the state close the gap between expected future job requirements for post-secondary education and current college enrollment and completion. Providing these tests for free is also about equity by increasing access to college for all students.
